Meeting Date: 12/05/2018

SUBJECT MATTER:

Receive, consider and act upon boundaries and names for the Cultural Arts Area in The Woodlands (as requested by Director Snyder);

FISCAL IMPACT:
BACKGROUND:
At its September 26, 2018 meeting, The Woodlands Township Board of Directors tasked the Ad Hoc Economic Development Committee to develop a concept regarding the recognition of the Cultural Arts with an officially recognized geographic location in The Woodlands.

The Committee met on Monday, October 8, 2018 with Dr. Ann Snyder and Carol Stromatt in attendance and Township staff members Don Norrell, Robin Cross, Nick Wolda, John Powers, Sonia Guerrero and Visit The Woodlands Assistant Director Elizabeth Eddins.

The Committee recognizes the importance of the arts in the community, which fosters cultural development, enhances property value and strengthens tourism appeal to a broader audience.  While not identified as a Cultural Arts District through the Texas Commission on the Arts program, The Woodlands currently embraces the cultural arts at multiple venues through a variety of festivals and events and projects like the art benches along The Woodlands Waterway. Additional projects include, but are not limited to, The Woodlands Center for Performing Arts (Pavilion), regularly scheduled events and annual festivals dedicated to the arts like The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival and Inspire Film Festival.

At its October 18, 2018 meeting, The Woodlands Township Board of Directors approved $10,000 from the Events and Admissions Tax line item for the Ad Hoc Economic Development Committee to develop branding for the Cultural Arts Area. A designer was engaged to help the subcommittee develop a logo/branding for the Cultural Arts Area.

One key aspect is location and where most of this activity takes place. The Committee believes The Woodlands Waterway and/or contiguous area serve as the major corridor to these art offerings. Taking this into consideration, the boundary map was created with input from a subcommittee comprised of Director Carol Stromatt, Amy Lecocq from The Woodlands Arts Council, Elizabeth Eddins of Visit The Woodlands and Nick Wolda of Visit The Woodlands/The Woodlands Township. The subcommittee also reviewed dozens of possible names and recommended The Waterway Arts District to the full committee.

The Committee met on November 28, 2018 to review the subcommittee’s work. The Committee approved the name as The Waterway Arts District and the map, which is attached to this Agenda Item. The Committee had suggestions to five different versions of the logo and these will be presented at the December 5, 2018 Board of Directors meeting.
RECOMMENDATION:
To be determined by the Township Board of Directors.
