Receive, consider and act upon a proclamation in support of the Monarch Butterfly Pledge;
No funding is required to issue a pledge. $5,000 has been allocated in the 2018 Budget for programs and activities related to habitat creation/restoration.
In 2017, representatives of PolliNation , a local non-profit organization, approached the Township Board of Directors requesting assistance in having The Woodlands designated as a Monarch butterfly community. The Board requested and received a 2018 Budget Planning Initiative Summary regarding the request (Attachment A) and subsequently allocated $5,000 in the 2018 Operating Budget for support of the initiative.
A criteria for the designation is for the local government to take the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayor’s Monarch Pledge (Attachment B).
Initiatives related to habitat restoration all relate to the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) Mayor’s Monarch Pledge program. While the program is heavily focused on mayors and municipalities, initial discussions with the NWF indicate that the Township may be eligible to participate in the program and its designations. The NWF Mayor’s Monarch Pledge includes 24 potential action items for communities to encourage creation and preservation of Monarch habitat. One of the first actions items is to issue a Pledge to raise awareness about the decline of the monarch butterfly and the species’ need for habitat.
The Township’s Environmental Services division is working with PolliNation to identify additional potential ways to meet the goals of the program.
Approve the proclamation in support of the Monarch Butterfly Pledge.
