Receive, consider and act upon a reclassification of the Fire Prevention Officer position;
Fire Prevention Officer - $16,647 total salaries and benefits costs
The Fire Prevention Officer will retire at the end of 2017, after serving in this position for over 30 years. Because this position will become vacant for the first time in many years, staff reviewed and subsequently revised the job description and minimum qualifications expanding the duties and responsibilities to include both fire inspection services and public fire safety education, Attachment A.
The fire department has proposed this position to be reclassified from Pay Grade 208 under the Township Pay Structure to a fire operations position at the level of a Lieutenant. The salary difference between the original and proposed pay classification is $12,331, and benefits costs total $4,316. Fire department positions equivalent to the duties and responsibilities of the proposed position hold the rank and receive similar pay as a uniformed Lieutenant in the following fire departments: Conroe, Sugarland, Baytown, Plano, Houston, and College Station.
Reclassifying the position to a Lieutenant allows the department the flexibility to laterally move and/or promote personnel between the Operations Division and the Support Services Division. The modified organizational philosophy affords additional career opportunities for firefighters, improves field coordination efforts, improves the quality of program delivery to our citizens, and ultimately increases the experience and professionalism of department personnel.
Approve the reclassification of the Fire Prevention Officer position to the rank of Lieutenant within The Woodlands Fire Department.
