Request Authorization for BNRC to Approve Locations for the
Planting of Memorial Trees on Pacific Grove Public Property
As discussed at recent BNRC meetings, the City Memorial Tree Planting
The program has not been well-publicized in recent years. Even some Mayors and
Council members were not fully aware of the program or the process for
planting these trees in memory of our deceased relatives and friends. It is
of concern to me and other members of the BNRC that decisions on where to
plant these trees are made solely by our City Arborist.

Although our Arborist does a fine job protecting the City's public and
private trees, it seems to me that it would in the best interest of all
Pacific Grove residents and visitors to have our BNRC provide some oversight
as to the location of the plantings. That could consist of a regular review
of the maps of parks, and other public spaces showing potential planting
locations. Such maps (i.e. aerial photos) were presented to the BNRC at our
February 18, 2020 meeting. The Arborist could continue to show people the
maps and a selection could be made and Public Works can plant a tree. Any
new locations would have to be approved by the BNRC.

This action would be consistent with the BNRC mission to support, encourage,
and facilitate conservation, restoration, beautification, and improvement of
natural resources in the city through projects, programs, and activities. I
, therefore, ask that the following item be added to our 9-15-20 agenda:
