|On January 20, 2021, the City Council held an additional concept review and discussion regarding the Task Force on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The City Council requested “buy in” from staff and directed the City Attorney’s office to prepare an ordinance to create a “Task Force on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” as a temporary body that, if warranted,
could ultimately become a permanent group.
If approved by City Council and after the second read, the City Clerk would move forward with a call for applicants and follow the same process that is already in place for the City of Pacific Grove’s Boards, Committees, and Commissions.
Section 2 of the attached draft ordinance clearly defines the Task Force Creation regarding: membership, purpose, terms designated, removal of members, selection of officers, Brown Act compliance, and the powers and duties.
Below is a current status on the four working group recommendations since the January 20, 2021 meeting:
1. Forming a “Task Force on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion”-
City Council is discussing.
2. Requiring “Equity Impact Assessment” for all City policies, programs, and services-
At the December 2, 2020 council meeting Council Member Smith recommended this item be a task for the Task Force to review. The council had consensus on this recommendation.
3. Resolution“Equity Framework for Governance”-
The resolution was adopted at the December 2, 2020 meeting.
4. Becoming a member of the Government Alliance on Race and Equity (GARE)-
Council gave staff direction to become a GARE member at the December 2, 2020 council meeting. On March 9, 2021 the City received confirmation of the membership and will receive an invoice for payment.
