Feral Hog Grant Interlocal Agreement
Maria Medrano, Grants Department
Authorize the execution of an Interlocal Agreement by and between Nueces County and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service for the Feral Hog Abatement Program.
Pursuant to the Texas Legislature, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Wildlife Services (WS) program hereby requests applications for County Feral Hog Abatement Grants (Grant). The Grant program (“Program”) is designed to encourage counties across the State of Texas to make a concentrated and coordinated effort to reduce the feral hog population and the damage caused by these animals throughout the year. Successful applicants will receive grants to initiate or continue feral hog abatement activities in their county.
On July 11, 2018, agenda item #3.H., the Commissioners Court ratified the execution of an Interlocal Agreement with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service for the 2018 feral hog abatement grant in the amount of $16,324. This grant paid for instituting a trap loan out program to county landowners. The County Demonstration Assistant trained each landowner on proper use of the trapping system and baiting procedures. The county trap loan program used a M.I.N.E. Gate with control box. M.I.N.E. is an acronym for Manually Initiated Nuisance Elimination. The M.I.N.E. camera is a wireless digital camera capable of remotely triggering the M.I.N.E. gate using a cell phone after sending photos to an email or cell phone.
On December 4, 2019, agenda item #3.R., the Commissioners Court ratified the execution of a second grant award in the amount of $8,197. The funds were used to purchase rigid panels for the traps, feeders, cellular cost/fees associated with the remote cameras purchased with the 2018 grant, supplies, etc.
On September 9, 2020, agenda item #2.R., the Commissioners Court ratified the submission of a grant application for this program.
The grant award totals $5,277 and there is no cash match required. The grant will to pay for data plans for the cameras that were bought with the previous grant. It will also help to cover supplies related to resident education. The grant period is retroactive to October 1, 2020 and will end on August 31, 2020.
