Rifle Resistant Body Armor Grant Award
Maria Medrano, Grants Department
Ratify the acceptance of a grant award from the Office of the Governor - Texas, Public Safety Office, Criminal Justice Division for the Nueces County Rifle-Resistant Body Armor Project.
The goal of the Governor’s Criminal Justice Division (CJD) is to provide needed funding to improve public safety and support victims of crime by filling system gaps and promoting innovative solutions to common problems. In 2017, in response to the July 7th, 2016, shooting of numerous police officers in Dallas, Texas, the Legislature passed and the Governor signed Senate Bill 12, which created a grant program within the governor’s office to increase the safety of Texas’ law enforcement officers by assisting agencies in the purchase of rifle-resistant body armor. CJD is now accepting applications for projects under this program.
On January 17, 2018, the Commissioners Court accepted a grant award in the amount of $55,730 with no match required. A total of 98 vests were purchased and were distributed as follows according to the orders submitted by the departments: Sheriff’s Office – 50; Constable Pct. 1 – 11; Constable Pct. 2 – 9 with 15 additional for reserve officers; Constable Pct. 5 – 11; and Public Works’ Environmental Enforcement – 2.
On February 12, 2020, agenda item #4.B.3., the Commissioners Court adopted a resolution authorizing the submission of a grant application for this program. The application was submitted for 6 vests for the District Attorney’s Office; 7 for Constable Precinct 3; and 8 for Constable Precinct 4. The total grant award is $14,592.48 with no match required. The grant period will run retroactively to September 1, 2020 and end on August 31, 2021.
