FY2021 Truancy Prevention Grant Application

RECOMMENDATION
Adopt a resolution authorizing the submission of a grant application to the Texas Office of the Governor, Public Safety Office, Criminal Justice Division for the Nueces County Case Management and Truancy Prevention Initiative.
BACKGROUND
The Governor’s Office Criminal Justice Division released their solicitations for applications for the FY2021 Truancy Prevention and Intervention Program.  The program is designed to providing funding for juvenile case managers and truancy prevention, including education programs and/or related services designed to prevent truancy including prevention services for children considered at-risk of entering the juvenile justice system.
DISCUSSION
On September 11, 2019, the Commissioners Court a grant award for the Truancy Prevention Initiative Project.  Under that grant, Judge Joe Benavides brought expert presenters to area schools to educate students on truancy and its effects on society and families.  The grant amount was $37,500 and there was no cash match required. 

Judge Benavides would like to apply for additional funding to have expert presenters visit even more schools as well as request funds for a juvenile case manager.  The grant application is currently being prepared and it is expected to total approximately $120,000 with no cash match required.
