VAWA GPS Monitors Application
Natalie Eckstrom, Grants Department
Adopt a resolution authorizing the submission of a grant application to the Office of the Governor, Public Safety Office, Criminal Justice Division for the Monitoring Offenders Against Women Project under the Violence Against Women Justice and Training Program, FY2022.
The goal of the Criminal Justice Division (CJD) is to provide needed funding to improve public safety and support victims of crime by filling system gaps and promoting innovative solutions to common problems. CJD is accepting applications for projects that promote a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to improving the criminal justice systems response to violent crimes against women, including domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking.
Since 2015, Nueces County has received grant funding for the Monitoring Offenders Against Women project. The funding pays for GPS monitors that are assigned to indigent defendants whom judges put on pretrial conditions of bond while they are awaiting trial for domestic violence related charges. The proposed resolution is in support of a grant application for the program’s continued funding.
For continuing projects such as this one, applicants may apply for the same amount received in the past year. Therefore, the application will be for a total of $65,000, of which $46,150 is in grant funds and $18,850 is the County’s match. The match will come from Department 1358 – Electronic Monitoring Program. Theh application is due on February 11, 2021.
