FY2022 Truancy Prevention Grant Application

Adopt a resolution authorizing the submission of a grant application to the Texas Office of the Governor, Public Safety Office, Criminal Justice Division for the Nueces County Case Management and Truancy Prevention Initiative.
The Governor’s Office Criminal Justice Division released their solicitations for applications for the FY2022 Truancy Prevention and Intervention Program. The program is designed to providing funding for juvenile case managers and truancy prevention, including education programs and/or related services designed to prevent truancy including prevention services for children considered at-risk of entering the juvenile justice system.
On September 11, 2019, agenda item #3.K., the Commissioners Court a grant award for the Truancy Prevention Initiative Project. Under that grant, Judge Joe Benavides brought expert presenters to area schools to educate students on truancy and its effects on society and families. The grant amount was $37,500 and there was no cash match required.
On November 4, 2020, agenda item #2.R., the Commissioners Court accepted a second grant award for $87,761.81 (no match). The current budget allows for the salary and benefits for a Juvenile Case Manager and the remaining amount of $37,500 would be used to continue work with Panorama Education for truancy prevention.
Judge Benavides would like to apply for continued funding to have expert presenters visit schools as well as request funds again for a juvenile case manager. The grant application is currently being prepared and it is expected to total approximately $120,000 with no cash match required. The grant application is due February 11, 2021.
