RECOMMENDATION

Adopt a resolution authorizing the submission of a grant application to the Office of the Governor, Public Safety Office, Criminal Justice Division for the FY2020 Opioid Antagonist Grant Program.

BACKGROUND

The Office of the Governor, Public Safety Office, Criminal Justice Division (CJD) recently announced funding availability under their FY2020 Opioid Antagonist Grant Program. State funds for these projects are authorized under Article IX, Section 18.83 of the Texas General Appropriations Act. All awards are subject to the availability of appropriated funds and any modifications or additional requirements that may be imposed by law. CJD expects to make available a one-time appropriation of $500K in FY2020.

DISCUSSION

Funds may be used for providing opioid antagonists to peace officers who, in the course of performing their duties, are likely to come into contact with opioids or encounter persons suffering from an apparent opioid-related drug overdose.

Projects must begin on or after 03/01/2020 and may not exceed a 6 month project period. There is no match required for this grant program and the total application amount is still being determined as of the submission of this agenda item (11/12/2019), but it will be available by the November 20^th Commissioners Court date. As of 11/12/2019, the Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney Office, Constable Precinct 1, and Constable Precinct 3 have expressed their interest in applying for this program.
