COUNCIL ACTION
AGENDA ITEM:
Presentation and discussion of the City's potential participation in the Global Opioid Settlement coordinated through the Office of the Attorney General of Texas
BACKGROUND:
In response to the crisis created by the abuse of prescription opioid, a global settlement has been reached with the major opioid distributors and manufacturer. The potential allocation for the State of Texas is projected at nearly $1.5 billion over 18 years. Texas cities have been asked to join the settlement by January 2, 2022 in order to receive a formulated amount for direct payments and funding for opioid abatement programs through the Texas Opioid Council based on the Texas Term Sheet.
FINDINGS:
Based on the Texas Term Sheet, the City of DeSoto potentially projects to receive $72,400 if it joins the opioid settlement. These funds can be used to purchase medications, fund treatment, education, and public service programs.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
There is no financial cost to the City in joining the settlement. The City would receive $72,400 for programs to assist with countering opioid abuse.
RECOMMENDATION:
This item is being presented for education and discussion purposes only. If the City Council is in support of joining the Texas settlement, the corresponding documents are anticipated to be presented at the November 2, 2021 City Council Meeting for consideration.
