AGENDA ITEM:
Presentation on upcoming changes to the Police Department's Body Worn Camera Policy following review by the Citizens Police Advisory Committee to comply with Botham Jean's law effective September 1, 2021
BACKGROUND:
The DeSoto Police Department continues to comply with the body worn cameras while remaining committed to the safe environment of the citizens of DeSoto. The Body Worn Camera Policy has been updated with the highlighted changes attached.  In keeping with the requirements of the Citizens Police Advisory Committee (CPAC) Ordinance, the Police Department will provide the City Council with necessary updates to the Body Worn Camera Policy to comply with the Botham Jean Law approved by the Texas Legislature. The upcoming changes have been presented to and reviewed by CPAC.
FINDINGS:
On September 1, 2021, a new law called Botham Jean's Law will take effect. This law will provide guidance and direction to the Police Department and their body worn camera policies. The presented DeSoto Police Department's body worn camera policy now reflects those changes and is in compliance in the new law.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
There will be no financial impact to the City of DeSoto. 
RECOMMENDATION:
This agenda item is being presented as an update and to receive feedback. No action is required by the City Council.
