Receive, consider, and act upon an adoption of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a Township paid-holiday (as requested by Director McMullan);
Adding this holiday will result in an additional $47,816 in salary costs.
The Township provides ten paid holidays to its employees - nine of these holidays are days that the Township administrative offices are closed. Employees are also given one Floating Holiday per year that they can use on a day of their choosing with their supervisor's approval. The Floating Holiday was intended to be used for other religious and/or federal holidays when the Township administrative offices remain open and where employees wish to take the day off. The current holidays observed are: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
During the transition between the Community Associations and The Woodlands Township, a comprehensive salary and benefits survey was conducted to assist with creating a salary and benefits package for the combined organizations. Comparable cities were surveyed during this process, and these comparable cities provided an average of ten paid holidays to their employees. Most County offices observe twelve or more holidays per year including Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President's Day and Veterans Day. The salary and benefits survey only gathered data from municipalities for comparison purposes. The City of Conroe and Montgomery County are closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day as it is an observed holiday.
Should the Township add Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a holiday, additional costs would be incurred by employees who work on the holiday. Staff projects these costs by department:
Parks and Recreation $ 2,835
Firefighters $ 38,304
Dispatchers $ 6,677
Total projected costs are $47,816.
To be determined by the Board.
