Meeting Date: 12/10/2015

SUBJECT MATTER:
Receive, consider and act upon a review of the Board's February Planning Session matters;
FISCAL IMPACT:
BACKGROUND:

Per the proposed Board meeting calendar, the Township Board of Directors will have a planning retreat on February 18, 2016, at 9 a.m. The proposed purpose of this planning retreat is to consider Board strategies for moving forward with key community issues in 2016.

As we have new Directors on The Township Board, staff believes that it would be beneficial to discuss Transportation, Economic Development and CVB strategies that have been reviewed and discussed by the Board over the past year. The purpose of this discussion would be to develop actionable Board strategies (for the new Board) which will provide direction for staff and the Ad Hoc Committees, if those terms are extended.

The recommendation is that staff assigned to the Ad Hoc Transportation Committee, the Ad Hoc Economic Development Committee and the CVB Board, work with the Committee Chairs and the CVB Board Chairman to develop a summary of issues and initiatives discussed over the past year. This background summary from the two Committees and the CVB Board will provide the basis for the Board to discuss the development of community strategies for 2016.

The Township Board will be considering the extension of the Ad Hoc Transportation and Economic Development Committees and the appointment of members at the December 10, 2015, meeting. The typical ad hoc committee extension has been for a one-year period and this continues to be the recommendation; however, if additional discussion is needed regarding the ad hoc committee structure, staff  would recommend that the discussion take place at the February planning meeting after we discuss the proposed transportation and economic development strategies. Per the current Board policy, “An Ad Hoc Committee, by definition, is temporary and established for a specific task or objective. Once the task is performed or the objective is reached, the committee is dissolved. In the formation of an Ad Hoc Committee, a deadline may be set for the time in which they must complete the work, request an extension or end.”
