Pursuant to NMSA 1978 § 3-54-2(D), the City may donate personal property to a political subdivision of the State of New Mexico where it is in the best interests of the public and is approved by the Local Government Division of the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration.
The Roswell Museum and Art Center (RMAC) was the beneficiary of a bequest that included eight (8) ceramic vessels from the estate of William A. Hoffman. The ceramic vessels have been in storage at RMAC since their bequest. The Curator of RMAC believes that the Western New Mexico University Museum (WNMU), which focuses on regional Native American ceramics would be the institution better suited to caring for, displaying, and interpreting the bequest. RMAC believes that this donation promotes the public benefit by helping to preserve the intent of the bequest and ensure that the public at large and the citizens of Roswell are able to see these vessels with appropriate context provided by experts at WNMU.
The proposed resolution would authorize the donation of the eight (8) ceramic vessels to WNMU, as a requirement of DFA approval, per § 3-54-2(D).
