SUBJECT:
The Police Department requests authorization to submit for grant funding from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program in the amount of $19,800.
RECOMMENDATION:
The Police Department requests authorization from Mayor and Council to seek grant funds from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program in the amount of $19,800. If awarded it is also requested that Mayor and Council authorize staff to accept grant funds, execute all grant and contract documents, accept and disburse funds, and perform necessary budget transfers. The funds will be utilized for overtime expenses and supplies to conduct various community policing activities to assist in the reduction of crime.

DISCUSSION:
Over the last few years, the Department has received funding for overtime from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program. This year the department is requesting to utilize $15,879 of the funds for overtime expenses to conduct various community policing activities to assist in the reduction of crime and help build community relationships. $3,921 of the funds will be used for community policing products and supplies for a variety of initiatives including but not limited to Bike Patrol, Neighborhood Blockwatch, Crime Free Multi-housing, Police Explorers Program, Coffee with a Cop, School Outreach Events, Crime Prevention Public Education, Citywide Special Events, and Public Safety Day. These events/programs have all been utilized to positively interact with citizens throughout our City in an effort to identify crime concerns and cooperatively implement solutions to decrease crime.
