SUBJECT:

Consider an Ordinance Creating a Judicial Selection Committee, describing its duties, and declaring an emergency.

RECOMMENDATION:

Staff is recommending Mayor and Council create a Judicial Selection Committee in accordance with the provisions of the City Charter and declare an emergency so the ordinance shall be effective immediately.

DISCUSSION:

In accordance with City Charter Article XI, Section 5, the council shall, by ordinance, establish a Judicial Selection Committee. The role of the committee is to recommend no less than two persons to fill the City Judge position. The City Judge serves coterminous with the Mayor. With the current Mayoral term coming to an end there is a need to create this committee. Due to the fact that the committee shall, within thirty days, make such recommendation, it is necessary to declare an emergency in order that the ordinance may be in place to create said committee.

Also per ordinance, immediately upon the filling of the City Judge position the Judicial Selection Committee will automatically cease to exist.
